A lot has changed since the last time I put together an NFL big board. Players who weren’t even on my radar have soared to the top of their position groups, can’t miss prospects have seemingly missed, and the usual suspects have played musical chairs for the top spots. This years draft may not have the top end talent at quarterback or wide receiver, but those in need of a game changing edge rusher or defensive back are in luck.
The big board is bound to change a ton once the conference championships and bowl games have been settled, and will continue to change through the combine and workout process. A bowl game hero can see their fortunes change in a huge way, a Senior Bowl bust can see their draft stock plummet.
Nothing you see here is indicative of draft order or where these guys will end up. The NFL puts a premium on certain positions that drives a prospects stock up or down. Either a quarterback, edge rusher or offensive tackle have been taken with the top pick every year since Keyshawn Johnson was selected #1 overall in 1996. In most cases those players weren’t necessarily the best prospect on the big board, but the importance of their positions to the sport warranted their selection.
In this case, my number one prospect is a safety, that position has never been drafted with the first pick going all the way back to 1936. So while Kyle Hamilton may be a generational level talent, the odds of his name being called first on draft night are slimmer than Devonta Smith’s just physique.
